My name is Chris Greaves and I set up this ProBoards forum. Was my avatar lodged? (later) Yes. I had forgotten to check ON the check box titled "Use only the Uploaded/Linked". Now you all know what I looked like seventeen years ago when I lived in Toronto. Cheers, Chris

Anybody want to talk about american chestnut ( c. dentata). There is a facebook group called the Canadian Chestnut Council, and this group is for anyone who doesn't use facebook and wants to talk about chestnuts and may or may not be a member of the Canadian Chestnut Council. The CCC is a charity with the goal of restoring the american chestnut in Canada.

I mean of course, the type of chestnut I can roast or boil to eat? Note: I may well delete this topic before too long. I started the topic as a "sandpit", just so that I could see if my avatar had appeared! Cheers, Chris

.... I started the topic as a "sandpit", just so that I could see if my avatar had appeared! Cheers, Chris As well, I wanted something with which to test the Search mechanism, since (to my mind) a BBS is first and foremost a place to store data (in messages) which (data) or knowledge can then be searched for answers! My Avatar doesn't show here, but does show over in General Discussion in the Support forum! (later: now it shows!) Cheers, Chris

I can see your avatar. I'm on PEI, and chestnuts grow here. Dentatas, the american ones are the hardiest, so I'd recommend those for NFLD. Hybrids might or might nor grow,,,Codroy valley comes to mind.

Well, if I got image attachments to work, you will see that I made the following modifications to the forum. (1) Fleshed out the forum name to "Canadian Chestnut Council" in full; the forum name itself is restricted to fewer characters (hence the URL) (2) Allowed broader access to PM the administrator. (3) Set time zone to Newfoundland. Well, I should get SOME bragging rights (grin!) (4) Bumped "Threads per page" to what appears to be the maximum allowable value (5) Bumped "Posts per page" to what appears to be the maximum allowable value These last two based on the fact that our eye/brain is much faster than our limbs, which is why it makes sense to maximize every window. Cheers, Chris

I'm on PEI, and chestnuts grow here. Well, Jocelyn, we can’t all live in the friendliest province now, can we? (HUGE grin) From my Driving To Bonavista page “ Lesson Number Two: I’m not in Nova Scotia anymore. I’m on Cape Breton Island. After that, I can have my coffee, and welcome!” Good to know. I have a 60’x90’ lot, have ordered four trees from www.hardyfruittrees.ca and now realize that my lot is too small, so they are being planted on a friend’s lot in Bunyans Cove, 90 minutes drive south from here (near Clarenville)
Still and all I would like to demonstrate that chestnut trees (the edible blight-resistant kind) can be grown here in Bonavista.
I have in mind planting sprouting seeds and growing the trees for 3 or 4 years and then passing them on. I am willing/keen to obtain different seeds and sprout and plant them.So if anyone wants to see if their seeds - from wherever your are based - will sprout here in Newfoundland, I will give that my best shot. Cheers, Chris

I logged out from "Admin" and am now my regular self "ChrisGreaves". Chris Greaves has the Admin avatar, so it's still me, but now I am looking inwards on posts. This should be the common avatar we see when I am a "member" of the forum.
